No current residential heritage districts claim to have any significant opposition. Once property owners understand how designation will work in their own community and affect them, they typically become supportive of the program. Approximately half of all municipalities that currently have at least one heritage district are considering adding others – an indication that property owners realize the benefits of the program.
Interestingly, similar to Bowmanville, most communities experience opposition to heritage designation – 89% of residential districts that are currently designated in Ontario said they experienced opposition prior to the district being approved.
